Objective : The aim of this study was to investigate whether positive psychology moderates the relationship between life stress and depressive symptoms among university students.
Methods : A total of 2,186 (987 male and 1,199 female) university students were randomly selected to participate in a survey. Demographic data, life stress, depressive symptoms, satisfaction with life and happiness were collected using self-reported questionnaires.
Results : By moderated regression analysis, the results showed that life stress negatively impacted depressive symptoms of university students, and satisfaction with life (¥â=-.084, p£¼.001) and happiness (¥â=-.048, p£¼.01) respectively buffered the negative effect of the life stress on depressive symptoms.
Conclusion : Overall, these findings suggest that the positive psychology can mitigate stress-induced depressive symptoms in university students. In the future studies, interventions based upon a procedure of coping with or reducing stress with positive psychology should be developed to deal with the psychological distress.
